And sometimes, it is. Maybe something was temporarily irritated and settled down on its own. But other times, a disappearing toothache is one of the more dangerous signs for your smile. Keep reading to see what might actually be happening and learn why you should treat it as a dental emergency.

Why Do Toothaches Sometimes Stop on Their Own?

There are a few reasons a toothache might fade without any treatment:

Minor irritation: A small piece of food lodged in your gum, a minor bruise on your tooth from biting down hard, or temporary sensitivity can all cause pain that goes away.

The Nerve Has Died: When a tooth is severely infected or decayed, the nerve inside can die. When that happens, the pain stops, but not because the problem is gone. A dead nerve just means your tooth can no longer send pain signals. The infection is still there and can continue spreading.

The Infection Has Spread: In some cases, an abscess can rupture, releasing pressure and temporarily relieving pain. In the moment, it can feel like the worst is over, but in reality, it’s getting worse.

Why “No Pain” Doesn’t Always Mean “No Problem”

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something needs attention. When that signal disappears, it’s tempting to assume the problem is solved. But tooth decay, infections, and nerve damage don’t go away without treatment—they just go into stealth mode.

A tooth with a dead nerve, for example, can still be infected, slowly spreading to the tissues and structures around it. If left alone long enough, what could have been a root canal turns into an extraction instead—or worse, a medical emergency.

When Should You Call a Dentist?

If a toothache disappears after more than a day or two of noticeable pain, it’s worth calling your dentist regardless of how you feel now. The same goes if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms:

Swelling in your face, jaw, or gums

Fever or fatigue

A bad taste or odor in your mouth

Sensitivity that lingered for more than 30 seconds

These are signs that something more than a minor irritation is going on. An emergency dentist can take X-rays, check your tooth, give you an idea of what’s happening, and offer solutions for relief.

A toothache that goes away on its own might be nothing, but when it comes to your health, it’s always better to be safe. When in doubt, make the call! Catching a problem early is almost always faster, easier, and less expensive than treating it after it’s had time to grow.

About The Author

Dr. Karl Anderson is a passionate dentist with a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Minnesota.
